GUL-E-SURKH
Gul-E-Surkh — گل سرخ, "Red Rose" — was one of Afghanistan's most popular music groups of the 1980s. It was first an orchestra founded within the Democratic Youth Organization of Afghanistan (DYOA), a cultural institution funded by the Afghan government. Its musicians were later salaried by the state to support and represent the art and culture of Afghanistan in festivals around the globe.
Beginning
Gul-E-Surkh was first a larger orchestra of more than 50 young musicians and singers. In 1983, Wajiha Rastagar joined the orchestra at sixteen, after winning a youth talent competition at Kabul University. Over the following years the ensemble contracted from a large orchestra into a core band, with Wajiha Rastagar as lead singer, Farid Rastagar as composer, singer and keyboardist, Amir Jan Sabori as lyricist and composer, Khalid Zaka on bass, Fahim Shamim on electric guitar, and Farhad Faizi on drums.
Gul-E-Surkh recorded and performed for Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), whose broadcasts carried their music into homes across the country. Their songs, among them "Tu Gufta Budi," "Zari Zari," and "Agar Bedani," were played on radio nationwide.
Their sound drew on the synthesizer-driven pop then sweeping the world, combined with Dari lyrics and Afghan musical tradition — a form of Afghan pop that has been little heard outside the country.
TOURING
Gul-E-Surkh performed internationally throughout the 1980s. In 1981 and 1982, before Wajiha Rastagar joined, the orchestra travelled with musicians from across Eastern Europe through East Germany — Berlin, Leipzig, Rostock, Dresden, Schwerin — and Czechoslovakia.
In 1984 the band toured India, performing at festivals of ghazal and classical music.
In the summer of 1985, Gul-E-Surkh performed at the 12th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow, an international gathering of some twenty-six thousand delegates from more than 150 countries.
In 1989 they played at the International Asian Festival in Kazakhstan to an audience of approximately forty thousand people. In the same year they represented Afghanistan at the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Over the course of the decade, Gul-E-Surkh performed in dozens of cities across Europe, Central Asia and beyond — among them Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, South Korea, and the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara.
AFTER 1992
In 1992, as civil war reached Kabul, Wajiha and Farid Rastagar left Afghanistan with their three young children and eventually settled in Germany.
They continued their music in the diaspora as a duo. Wajiha Rastagar and Farid Rastagar recorded seven albums over the following three decades, touring for Afghan audiences across the diaspora. For a generation scattered by war, their music became one of the few continuous threads back to the country they had left.

THE CHILDREN'S ALBUMS
In 2004, the Rastagars produced Alocha, recorded with their youngest daughter Hadja, then six years old. It is the first children's album made for Afghan children. A second album, Yak Qese Taza — Peace Please, followed in 2010.

The recordings gathered here are presented for historical and cultural preservation. Where information is incomplete or a recording is undated, that is noted. Corrections and contributions from anyone who remembers these performances are welcome.
